Hawzah News Agency- Amid soaring levels of anti‑Muslim hate crimes, the UK government has enlisted the British Muslim Trust, backed by the Aziz Foundation and Randeree Charitable Trust, to take over monitoring duties once funded to Tell Mama.
BMT, led by activist Akeela Ahmed, is set to begin operations in early autumn, backed by the government's newly launched “Combating Hate Against Muslims Fund”. The fund responds to record-breaking hate incidents and fills a gap left by Tell Mama’s March funding cessation.
Ahmed said: “For too long, anti-Muslim hate has been under-recognised and under-reported. BMT exists to change that – by listening to communities, amplifying their voices, and working with partners across society to ensure that no one is left to face hate alone.
Under the new mandate, BMT will establish comprehensive reporting mechanisms for both online and offline hate crimes, offer direct support to victims, raise public awareness, and encourage increased reporting.
Ahmed stressed the trust's mission "to change that — by listening to communities, amplifying their voices, and working with partners across society to ensure that no one is left to face hate alone". Faith minister Lord Khan also pledged government support in combating Islamophobia alongside the new trust.
This move arrives amid a national surge in hate crimes and a transition away from the decade-long government partnership with Tell Mama. The BMT’s establishment marks a significant effort to strengthen monitoring and support frameworks for British Muslim communities.
